Ek Balam is open daily year-round. A visit requires basic preparation for hot weather and steep stone steps.
Getting there
Valladolid is the closest city and the best starting point.
| How | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colectivo: Take a shared taxi/colectivo from Calle 37 between Calle 44 and Highway 295 in Valladolid. | 25-35 minutes | 80 MXN per person | Colectivos leave when full (usually 4 passengers) and do not run on a strict timetable. Ask for the Colectivo Ek Balam. |
| Car: Drive north from Valladolid on Highway 295 towards Tizimín, turn right after Temozón at the Santa Rita exit. | 30 minutes | 100 MXN for parking | The roads are well-paved and clearly signed. A rental car offers flexibility to visit the cenote afterwards. |
| Tour: Join a guided day trip from Valladolid, Mérida, or the Riviera Maya (Cancun/Tulum). | Half-day to full-day depending on origin | Varies | Often combined with trips to Cenote Xcanche, Rio Lagartos, or Chichén Itzá. |
| Taxi: Hire a private taxi from the center of Valladolid or the ADO bus station. | 25-35 minutes | 300 to 400 MXN one-way | Agree on the price beforehand and arrange for the driver to wait or return for you, as finding an empty taxi at the ruins can be difficult. |
